Broken Key Extraction in Little Britain
Overnight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway.
In plain words
If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first. On the phone, describe the lock, whether any of the blade shows, and whether the key turned when it broke. Have photo identification to hand, or the ownership papers if it is a vehicle. That short conversation means the locksmith arrives with the right extractors and a plan.
How the visit goesOvernight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway. One more push and it sheared off flush with the face of the cylinder. There is nothing left to grip, and the cold is not helping.

How the visit goes

Checks particular to a vehicle
A car adds a few questions. Did the key break in the door, the trunk or the ignition? Does the head in your hand hold a transponder chip or remote, and does the car start with the spare if there is one? Is the steering wheel locked, which can hold an ignition cylinder under tension and pin the fragment in place? Do the other doors open with the same key, or is the vehicle on a different key for the ignition and doors? These answers decide whether the job is a door extraction and a new blade, or an ignition extraction that needs the wheel freed and the wafers checked first.
The last resort, said out loud first
If a fragment has been glued in place, driven behind the pins with a screwdriver, or seized into a corroded plug, drilling can be the only route left, and you are told so before it starts. The bit is placed precisely where plug meets housing, freeing the plug to rotate; the damage is contained inside the cylinder and the door, trim and bolt are left alone. A fresh cylinder or complete deadbolt is installed during the same visit, keys are cut and tried, and the door is locked behind you before the van pulls away. It happens rarely, and it still ends with a door you can trust.
A clear record for the landlord or manager
If the lock belongs to a rental unit, a condo or a workplace, you get a plain account of what was done: the fragment removed, the cylinder inspected and serviced, any key cut, and whether a rekey or replacement was recommended. Tenants and landlords in this province each carry obligations when locks are changed and keys are shared, so if the cylinder was replaced or rekeyed, the note records who now holds which key. For a property manager it closes the ticket cleanly; for you it means the next conversation about that door starts from facts rather than memory.

What affects the quote
Number of keys cut
Copies are counted individually. One replacement for a single occupant and four for a household are different lines, and you choose the number on the spot.
How far the locksmith travels
Every call-out includes the drive. A lock on the next street and one at a rural address an hour out are different trips, and the quote includes travel as its own consideration.
Rekeying other doors to match
If the cylinder ends up rekeyed or replaced, matching the other exterior locks to the new key is priced per cylinder, and simplest while the locksmith is already there.
What to have ready
- Do you own, rent or manage the property, and is identification with you?
- Would you like extra keys cut while the locksmith is there?
- Had the key been needing extra force or a wiggle lately?
Broken Key Extraction: questions
QuestionsWill extracting the piece damage my lock?
Extractor tools grip the key, not the lock, and are meant to leave the pins, springs and plug as they were: hooks and spirals ride in the keyway grooves beside the fragment and draw it out the way the key travels. It is not certain, though; a deeply lodged fragment or a prior failure can still leave a lock, especially a vehicle cylinder, needing further work. Damage most often comes from what happens before the locksmith arrives, mainly tweezers, screwdrivers and glue, which is why leaving the keyway alone matters.
Will the lock work again once the piece is out?
In most cases yes, and it is tested in front of you with a key that fits. The inspection after extraction is where the honest answer lives: if the pins, springs and cap are sound and the keyway is clean, the cylinder goes back into service with a fresh key. If wear or damage caused the break, that is explained and a rekey or new cylinder is offered as a separate choice.
Should I rekey or replace the lock afterwards?
Only if the inspection finds a reason. A clean cylinder with sound pins goes straight back to work with a new key. Rekeying makes sense when the pins are worn and sticking, or when a lost or unaccounted key shares the same cut. Replacement is for a cylinder that is corroded, cracked or of a grade that will keep eating keys. Each is offered as its own decision, not bundled in.
