High Security Locks in Little Britain
The pharmacy stockroom, the server closet or the cash office is protected by the same ordinary cylinder as the staff washroom.
In plain words
A high security cylinder is rated by independent laboratory testing that times how long it holds out against picking, impressioning, drilling, prying and wrenching. The lock body and deadbolt carry a separate hardware grade for strength, cycle life and finish. A locksmith reads those ratings for you and matches them to your door, because a rating on the box means nothing if the door frame is thin or the bolt barely enters the jamb. The visit usually ends with a heavier deadbolt, a reinforced strike fastened into the framing and a cylinder whose keys cannot be copied at a kiosk.
How the visit goesYou have lost count of how many people have had a key to your house over the years: cleaners, a contractor, a former partner, the previous owner's family. The lock still works, but you no longer know who else it works for.

How the visit goes

The bolt, the pocket and the strike
A deadbolt is only as good as how far it reaches and what it reaches into. The locksmith measures the throw of the bolt with the door closed, checks that it fully extends without the door being lifted or pushed, and looks at the pocket it enters in the jamb. A shallow pocket, a stamped strike plate and screws barely longer than a thumbnail are the usual finding on a builder-grade door. Then the frame is examined for splits, soft wood and gaps behind the jamb, since a kick lands on the strike, not on the cylinder.
Heavy hardware for commercial doors
Storefront, warehouse and office doors take heavy-duty lock bodies rather than residential deadbolts. Depending on the door, that means a commercial deadbolt or mortise lock with a hardened cylinder guard, a free-spinning collar that defeats wrenches, and a laboratory-rated cylinder inside it. Narrow aluminium doors get a deadlock made for their stile. The locksmith fits the lock to the existing preparation where it is standard, adjusts the strike in the frame, and confirms that any exit device or closer on the same door still works exactly as before so people leave easily while the door holds from outside.
Watching the patent calendar
Patented keyways protect you for as long as the patent lasts. When it expires, blanks may be sold openly and the copy-control layer weakens, though the mechanical resistance of the cylinder stays. The locksmith notes the patent term of your system at handover so the date is not a surprise. Many years before it arrives, the same hardware can usually be moved to a newer patented keyway by changing cylinders and keys while the lock bodies stay. Treat it like a roof: nothing needs doing for a long while, but the date is written down.

What affects the quote
Cylinder rating and format
A patented residential cylinder, a laboratory-rated commercial cylinder and an interchangeable core sit at different points on the scale, and the format that fits your present hardware decides which lines are available.
Retiring the old keyway
If other doors stay on the old key for now, they may need rekeying so an unknown copy has nowhere to go; that is additional cylinder work alongside the upgrade.
Commercial lock bodies
Heavy-duty deadbolts, mortise locks, narrow-stile deadlocks and cylinder guards for storefront and warehouse doors are heavier hardware than residential deadbolts and priced as such.
What to have ready
- Does the door have a closer, push bar, alarm contact or keypad on it already?
- How many exterior doors do you want included?
- Is this a house, condo, rental unit or business premises, and do you own or manage it?
High Security Locks: questions
QuestionsWhat about the glass panel next to my front door?
A sidelight within reach of the inside thumb-turn is the weak point of an otherwise strong door, since a broken pane lets a hand reach the turn. Options include moving the deadbolt further from the glass, a lock function that needs a key inside as well, or a laminated pane. Because everyone must still be able to leave easily, the locksmith talks through the trade-offs and helps you pick the arrangement that suits your household.
Can a hardware store or kiosk copy my new key?
No. The blank for a patented keyway is distributed only through the manufacturer's network to locksmiths who hold the system, and the side milling or angled cuts need a machine set up for that line. A kiosk would have neither the blank nor the cut. Extra keys come through your locksmith, cut from code, once an authorised person has approved the order. That routine is a small inconvenience compared with never knowing who has a copy.
Can all my doors be on one key?
Yes, and most homes ask for exactly that. Every exterior cylinder is pinned to the same combination so one controlled key opens the front, back, side and garage entry. A gate or shed padlock on the same keyway can join it. For businesses, the same keyway can carry a small master system where staff keys open only their areas and a manager key opens everything. The keying plan is agreed before any pinning is done.
